New open access deal with Microbiology Society
The University of St Andrews has signed up to a 2-year Publish and Read deal with the Microbiology Society. The Microbiology Society publishes 7 journals, including Journal of General Virology, Microbial Genomics, and Microbiology.
This deal is designed to provide institutions with an alternative to paying for subscriptions as well as individual APCs for article level open access. Instead, the Library pays for one yearly fee which includes both unlimited access to journal content and unlimited open access publishing for St Andrews corresponding authors. This has the benefit of reducing the overall costs, as well as avoiding the administrative burden of arranging individual open access fees for journal articles.
Kathryn Spiller who negotiated the deal for Jisc had this to say of the deal:
“We are thrilled to have worked with universities, funders and the Microbiology Society to create a transitional model that allows 100% of UK output to be published open access on a cost-neutral basis” (JISC press release)
Some other benefits of the deal include:
- Unlimited open access publishing
- CC BY licences as standard
- Low administrative overheads for researchers
To ensure articles are covered by this deal St Andrews corresponding authors must ensure they use their University of St Andrews email address when submitting.
