This new policy brings UKRI into alignment with other Plan S signatory funders such as Wellcome Trust and Horizon Europe. Plan S aims to simplify the policy landscape whilst simultaneously accelerating the shift to open access business models and increasing the benefits of open access to researchers. As UKRI puts it, the goal of the new policy is:

“[To make] the outputs of UKRI funded research more accessible and reusable – for the benefit of research, society and the economy; providing sustainable support for open access and better value for money; encouraging the development of new models of open access publishing; and supporting the adoption of open access in the UK and internationally.”

The policy covers three areas:

  • Open access to research articles, which came into effect for articles submitted after 01 April 2022
  • Open access to long-form publications, which comes into effect for books and chapters published after 01 January 2024
  • Data Access Statements, which concerns all research articles submitted after 01 April 2022

We have updated the webpages to reflect the new UKRI Open Access policy. Here you will find more details about the policy and useful practical guidance.
